When our kitchen was being remodeled early last fall, we stayed at a hotel for 6+ weeks. We ate out almost every meal. (I won’t lie, I did not hate it.) I did become accustomed to an almost daily serving of Chick-fil-a Yogurt. It was my go to takeout breakfast and it was divine. When we went back to home-living and home-cooking, I missed my daily yogurt! I’d find an excuse to go get some many days, which always ended with me getting a lemonade too and a breakfast burrito for Matt.
I don’t want the health consequences or budget consequences of daily Chick-fil-a. First, I tried to figure out if you could just buy the same kind of yogurt in the store. After much googling, I’ve learned a comparable yogurt doesn’t exist at the grocery store. I realized the only way forward was to figure out how to make it at home.
Yogurt Making
If you’re new to making yogurt, let me clear some things up. First, it’s not hard, but there are a lot of steps that span a lot of time. It will be helpful to understand up front that there are basically 3 phases of yogurt creating. It all may seem like a lot, but each individual task is not hard and it’s all spread out, so it just seems like a few minutes here and a few minutes there until it’s done.
Phase 1 (Making): You mix the ingredients together as directed in the recipe, put them in your Instant Pot (set to Venting), and press the yogurt button. Your instant pot will alert you when it’s done, which takes 8 hours.
Phase 2 (Cooling): As soon as the yogurt’s done, take off the lid. You DO NOT MIX the yogurt yet. When I started making yogurt, I’d stick a spoon in to see if the yogurt set (like in the picture). But don’t mix! Take out the inner pot, and put a plate on top with a few layers of paper towel underneath to help absorb moisture. Put down a hot pad on your fridge shelf, then set the yogurt in the fridge to cool down completely. This phase can take as long as you need it, the exact time doesn’t matter as much. I let cool 4-6 hours, or even overnight, depending on when Phase 1 finishes.
Phase 3 (Straining): Now you can MIX the cooled yogurt. The vanilla bean usually sinks to the bottom, so as you stir, you’ll see it get the beautiful vanilla bean spots spread throughout. It’s really gorgeous. Now, put it in a yogurt strainer until satisfied. The longer you strain it, the thicker it will be. I strain about 4 hours, maybe longer sometimes.
What to do with WHEY: The liquid you strain away is called whey. After much googling, I’ve determined it’s very healthy, so I pour a little in a bowl for my dog and pour the rest over my garden soil. I read that some people add to smoothies, etc.
What You’ll Need
I think the rest of the ingredients you can easily get at the grocery store. The Fairlife Ultra Purified Milk is sold near regular milk. Sometimes I can find the vanilla paste at the grocery store, but a lot of times it’s not in stock.
Copycat Chick-fil-a Yogurt
Ingredients
- 52 oz Fairlife Ultra Filtered Milk, divided
- 2 tbsp Oui Vanilla Yogurt, heaping
- 14 oz Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1 cup Heavy Cream
- 3 tsp Rodelle Vanilla Paste
- 1/3 cup Powder Sugar
Instructions
- Pour about 1/4 of the Fairlife Milk into the Instant Pot.
- One at a time, whisk in Oui yogurt, sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream, vanilla paste, and powder sugar. Then whisk in the rest of the Fairlife Milk.
- Place the lid on top, set to venting. Press the yogurt button and double-check default incubation time is set for 8 hours.
- When the 8 hours finishes, remove the inner pot. The yogurt becomes more tart the longer you leave it past 8 hours, so try to remove as soon as possible once it's finished. DO NOT STIR THE YOGURT YET. Cover the pot with a few layers of folded paper towel, then place a plate on top. Place the pot in your fridge for 4-6 hours, or overnight.
- When the yogurt is thoroughly cooled, you can now mix it. The vanilla bean usually sinks to the bottom, mix until it is thoroughly blended.
- Pour the yogurt into a yogurt strainer. Strain for 4-6 hours, the longer you strain then the thicker the yogurt will become.
- You're done. Divide the yogurt into individual size containers for easy portion control.
- Top with fresh berries and granola for the full Chick-fil-a experience.
I had to tell my kids they could only have one yogurt a day or they’d go through it all at once! They love love love it. In full disclosure, my husband doesn’t think it tastes exactly like CFA yogurt, but says he likes this yogurt better. 🤷♀️
From my home to yours,
Mary

Yum! I’ve never made yogurt before but this definitely makes me want to try doing so. Thank you for posting this with all the steps! Goodness, I want some now!😋
Mary says
I made it again yesterday. I feel like it gets better every time, if that’s possible.
Shirleen Kidd says
I don’t have an insta pot. Is there something else I can use instead?
Mary says
I’m sorry, this is the only way I’ve done it. I know there are yogurt maker appliances. I assume however you’d make yogurt that if you use these ingredients, you should get a similar flavor.
Margie Farmer says
How long will this last in the fridge once you put it in the containers? I had my first CFA yogurt last night and I have been trying to find if it was available in a store. I’ve tried several greek yogurts and hadn’t found anything I liked.
Mary says
You know, I don’t exactly know. It lasts a while. If it smells good and doesn’t have any spots of mold on the top, you’re good to go! But, if you had one little container every day for a few weeks, you’ll be just fine still at the last one.
Catalina says
omgosh this is brilliant! I have been searching weeks for this yogurt LOL
thanks for sharing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mary says
Let me know how it goes!!
Margie says
I haven’t received a reply to my question. How long will the yogurt last once you put it in the containers?
Mary says
Sorry it took me a while, I’m pretty busy with all my kids home during the summer! 🙂
Tracy says
This recipe is amazing! Thank you for taking the time to figure it out!
Mary says
You are so welcome! It makes me so happy to hear you’re loving it like we do!

Mary says
I’m sorry, I don’t have a video on how to make yogurt. I’m sure you can find a video using this method, but then just substitute my recipe. Good luck!
Amanda says
Can you make a double batch ? My kids ate this so fast! Wondering if it would be too much
Mary says
I think it just depends on how big your instant pot is! I’ve only tried this amount at a time, but please report back if you’re successful in doubling it!
Barbara says
It’s wonderful! I’m glad I tried it – we forgot to put the powdered sugar but it was delicious even without it!
Mary says
Awesome! So glad you’re loving it. The powdered sugar definitely isn’t required for it to still be good! (But, the sugar does help when you’re craving that sweet CFA style, lol.)
Sandra says

Sandra says
Yeah sure!!! I found a video like a similar method I think so but I follow your tips I hope I’ll get a good results thanks
Mary says
Good luck! I think it will turn out, it’s terrifying the first time, but it’s magical and works!
Amme says
Excited to try this, do you use whole milk? There are a couple different types of Fairlife so I wanted to make sure. Thanks!
Mary says
Yes, definitely whole milk. This is sooo good! I think I might make some this week too! 🙂
Londa says
Thank you for the recipe!!! I wonder if it’s possible to make it with 2% milk?
Mary says
Try with caution, because I’m not sure what difference that would make since I’ve never tried it. I literally have phase 1 going at this exact moment. I suggest trying it as written first before trying to tweak it to your own liking. That way you know what change made what difference.
TaWanda says
I have to admit that I was very skeptical of this recipe. Despite that, I made it with the hopes that it would at least be edible. Boy, was I so wrong. Saying this yogurt is delicious is an understatement. I have been eating spoonfulls of this all morning. The recipe was super simple to follow. I love the fact that there are not very many ingredients. I will definitely be making more of this as I don’t see what I made lasting very long.
Mary says
I’m so glad you like it! I had some for breakfast today. My favorite way lately is with some blackberries and a sprinkle of granola!
Candina Janicki says
Super excited to try this, I took am addicted to the yogurt! I am nervous but saving me the extra expense and guilt of finding excuses to buy 5 yogurts at a time, totally worth it. Now, to figure out the granola for on top
Mary says
Though my husband makes granola, his granola is too “precious” to be used as a topping (he and the kids love to eat it alone with milk). When we want a little granola on our yogurt, I just grab a bag from the grocery store. We’ve had good luck with the Nature Valley Oats N Honey. I hope it turned out so good for you!
Cleoda Lynn Pease says
I froze some for 2 months. Let stand in refrigerator over night, stir it and taste just like first day I made it.
Mary says
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing that!
Lauren Jackson says
I just made this and wow 10/10!!! I would have to say this is spot on to the Chick-Fila yogurt!!! I was also constantly craving Chick-Fila yogurt, and at $5 a cup, I wanted to see if I could make it myself. This recipe is it! Thanks so much for posting. I did accidentally use 2 tablespoons of the vanilla paste, and was worried it wasn’t going to come out good, but it tastes just like what I was hoping it would!
Mary says
I’m so glad you like it! I literally make it every week because it’s still my favorite breakfast. The few days without it in between batches is so painful, lol. And as for the vanilla, I always measure that with my heart. On this last batch, I was finishing up the container of vanilla bean paste so I just put everything left in the jar. A little extra vanilla can’t be a bad thing!

I’ve tried this twice in my Ninja pot on the yogurt setting. Both times it turned brown and the bottom burned 😮💨
Mary says
I’m not familiar with the Ninja pot, but I’d say something is definitely going wrong with the appliance. The temperature should never raise enough to cook anything, let alone burn anything! The yogurt setting should keep a steady WARM temperature that creates a happy environment for all that healthy yogurt bacteria/probiotics to replicate itself until the entire pot is yogurt. If you can borrow a friend’s Instant Pot with a yogurt setting, I’d definitely try that! I know it’s got to be frustrating to waste all these ingredients twice, but I can give a word of endorsement that the Instant Pot yogurt setting does it right! I’ve never had one pot go bad, even when I messed up and forgot to leave the topper to venting for part of the time and even when I forgot the yogurt for many hours after it was done … the yogurt in these cases wasn’t as perfect as normal, but was still completely usable. I’ve never had my yogurt cook, let alone burn. Good luck!
Courtney says
We use honey in place of the powdered sugar and it is wonderful!!
Mary says
Awesome! Glad you like it!

Is the ultra filtered milk supposed to be lactose free? That’s the only kind of fair life milk I can find. Thank you for your help!
Mary says
It does happen to be lactose free, though of course the heavy cream adds all that right back in, so it’s just a coincidence and the yogurt is not lactose free. Having the Fairlife in my fridge for making yogurt came in so handy when my kids had a lactose intolerant friend over and they wanted to eat cereal. I think that’s the only reason I would even know what you meant because I never even noticed it said lactose free until the friend looked in our fridge and was so happy to see it! lol
