Another title for this blog post might be IKEA frame + leftover fabric = Super Cheap and Easy Statement Art.
The idea and plans for the new art above my fireplace mantel have been swirling in my head for a long time, and this weekend I finally made it happen. It was actually really easy. This is what it looked like just before I changed it out –
This is what it looked like after we hung it and added the mini pear trees. It was a snow day here and my kids had put their snow gear by the fireplace to dry, so I asked if they could move it for me to take a picture.
Well, little Cougar heard “picture” and assumed he was the star model as per the norm around here.
Eventually we distracted him away and I took a picture of just the mantel.
Here’s the details …
Easy Statement Art (Framed Fabric)
Materials:
I had these three frames from an IKEA shopping trip before I broke my foot.
I used three fabric scraps from sewing/decorating projects around my house. I used fabrics that aren’t found in the living room on purpose, since I wanted the art to stand out instead of blend into matchy-matchy. The blue and white is leftover from my bedroom curtains, the middle fabric is leftover corral lace over white backing used for a clothes sewing project for my daughters, and the right fabric is leftover from the curtain material in my planner studio.
How To:
I cut the fabric to fit the frame, ironed it, then taped it across the top onto the back of the frame matting so that it wouldn’t slide down in the frame over time.
Easy enough that my seven year old felt like she did all the work.
She told everyone to look at the art she had made and posed everything for this picture! Ha!
That’s it! This project was long over due, especially for how easy it was. You should totally do this!

I always have a difficult time finding art that I love. This is a perfect idea. Love it. Thanks for sharing. Oh. Quick question. What sizes are the frames?
Mary says
I can’t remember exactly, but looking at them now, I’d say 11×14 and 16×20?? I’d get up and measure, but I’m sitting watching a movie with the kids and don’t have my boot on to get up and walk around. 🙂 I’m glad you like the idea, though! I’m so glad I made the change. I’m so happy with how fresh it feels.

Hi Mary, love the curtains, where did you get them?
Mary says
Thank you! I bought the fabric online and sewed them myself. I tend to make all of my own curtains because I want to pick the perfect fabric.
