Living Standards – Minimum Daily Habits

If you want to get organized, improving your daily Living Standard is an important part. Our Living Standard is the accumulation of daily habits we’ve come to accept. Organization, at the core, is really all about habits. If you usually skip bed-making, leave dirty dishes in the sink for a while, or pile things up instead of putting things away … this is the standard of living you’ve accepted for yourself. How you treat these little things is the biggest indicator of how you treat your home in general. Any attempt to “get organized” is going to be unsuccessful without also working to improve these daily habits as well.

People with different Living Standards often get married – just the way it seems to go. Whether you’re the cleaner or the messier person in your relationship, remember to introduce these daily habits into your home with humility and grace. We all have a little improving we can do. Developing these daily habits will be the most important organizing you do during the Organizing Boot Camp or during any attempt at getting organized.

Below are the four minimum habits for an organized life. Change your daily habits and change your life!

FOUR BASIC DAILY HABITS

1 – Make your bed every morning.

Instantly brighten your room and mood by simply making your bed. Everything feels cleaner when beds are made! You might find yourself doing other “little easy things” to keep the good feeling going. Whether consciously or subconsciously, making your bed makes a big difference.

2 – Get dressed out of grubby clothes every day.

If yoga pants are your daily uniform, make sure they are at least a clean pair. Go ahead and fix your hair while you’re at it. Do what it takes to personally feel ready for anything the day may bring. Getting dressed does wonders for changing the course of our day. Being dressed pushes away procrastination and feelings of “blah.”

3 – No dirty clothes on the floor.

Make the effort every day to put away dirty clothes. This isn’t to say I expect you to have your laundry system sorted from Day 1, but this is to say you should be no dirty clothes on the floor. Clean clothes should be put away and dirty clothes put in a hamper.

4 – Leave your kitchen clean every night.

If this is a new habit, it will be difficult at first, but as you commit to living this important habit, you’ll find a rhythm to make it happen. In our family, no one leaves the kitchen after dinner until the kitchen is cleaned. Working together means more family time and teaching our children important life skills. Plus, many hands make light work! Children who start off not very helpful, eventually become helpful and this is how they learn. Do not leave today’s mess for tomorrow! You will not feel more like cleaning it tomorrow.

Nightly kitchen checklist includes:

  • Clean the dishes and leave the sink empty. Do not leave today’s mess for tomorrow! You will NOT feel more like dealing with it tomorrow.
  • Put away food and wipe down your counters and table.
  • Sweep your floor.

For the next seven weeks, you can track your new daily habits with the Daily Habits Progress Tracker in the Organizing Boot Camp Printable. You’ll notice that all the other organizing is easier to accomplish with these basic habits handled first. You deserve a clean and organized home.

You Deserve This!

You deserve a home that feels good. It is worth the effort to get it there. If you’ve gotten used to a lower standard of living or just constantly feeling like you’re not thriving, you can change that with small daily habits. They really do effect EVERYTHING!

From my home to yours,
Mary

Love and am encouraged by your topics. I have developed a routine that includes using a swiffer duster and I go threw each room daily and dust. Every surface everyday. I love the sense of accomplishment. This is a task I dreaded-dusting. Now it’s my platform daily and I’m off and running.

That sounds awesome. I love how you turned something you didn’t like into a strength. I bet your house has less dust than most!

I will be following along with your boot camp but like in the past I can’t purchase your booklet as you only take PayPal.

Sorry about that. We are looking into changing that in the future, but I’m usually a one-woman show and only have so much time as a busy mom of 4. I did hire one of my daughters to help me this summer work on some upgrades to the blog, so we’ll see how much she’ll be able to help me accomplish behind the scenes. Wish us luck. šŸ™‚
