My 2019 Garden

It has been a few years since I’ve had a garden and I’ve missed it SO.MUCH. (This was my last garden in Arkansas!) I am not an expert at growing things, but I love it so much, and I’m getting better all the time. I really love the ambience the garden gives to my back porch, where we spend a lot of time.

We are still trying to decide the ultimate plan of the back yard, so I didn’t want to commit to building out a garden on the lawn. Having my garden on our porch is having a lot of positive side effects – it makes the porch more cozy and it is easier to take care of my garden regularly when it is so close.

I’m mostly growing tomatoes, different kinds. And basil. And lots of little cilantro plants. I’ve also tried to grow peppers, but the plants aren’t really growing. My pepper plants are not dead, but not growing. I have no idea why.

Look out for the green onion stalks sticking up! I actually cut some green onions in my kitchen and felt the spontaneous urge to go plant the bulbs in the dirt. Sure enough, they grew! Isn’t that awesome?!

I found these raised garden beds for a good price at Sam’s club, but these ones on Amazon seem similar.

I think the best way to show you is just in lots of pictures – enjoy! And yes, I have a weird love of gnomes. I just do! 🤷‍♀️I tell my kids the gnomes watch over the garden…

My garden started as seeds inside my house in March.
The right side of the garden has peppers, Zinnia flowers (because why not?), basil, cilantro, and later I added chives.
The left side is all tomatoes – different kinds. I didn’t think my baby plants were looking so good.
The start –
My baby garden was growing!
Look, the tomatoes are higher.
The cilantro seeds began to pop up.
These are very comfy chairs I sit in daily.
I stuck cilantro seeds all over the place to see what would happen. They grew. I’ve pulled lots out, but left some in strange places.
The baby tomatoes are full-blown teenagers, which means…
Time for cages.
The Zinnias are growing, the chives are growing, the basil is huge … but the peppers are still tiny.
Look at those chives, the gift that keeps on giving. (I put the bottom of the green onion plant in my garden as I was cutting green onions to go with dinner.
I love our porch … it is really starting to come together! (Oh, and those plants on the yellow chairs are more tomatoes. Who would’ve guessed?)

Hopefully I’ll be sharing photos later this year of lots and lots of tomatoes. Crossing my fingers!

Are you gardening this year?

From my home to yours,
Mary
