My Eyes are Different Colors

Since today is my birthday, I’m going to indulge in sharing random facts about me that you wouldn’t know and probably don’t really care to know.

Sorry, not sorry.

One of those facts about me as that I have heterochromia, or in other words, my eyes are different colors. It isn’t a super obvious difference like a blue eye and a brown eye.

One of my eyes is hazel green, and the other is brown on the bottom and hazel on the top. Technically this is partial heterochromia (or sectoral heterochromia).

Here are some close-ups, so you can see. Taken on different days, in different lighting.

Do you see how the eye on the right has a line through it near the top of the pupil, where it is green on top and hazel-brown on the bottom? There is also a patch of the brownish spot in the top portion of the other eye.

Don’t worry, I’m fine. A waterpark took me out of commission for a few days this past summer. And that makes me feel really old to even type out loud. I hate this super-dramatic picture, but it is hard to find pictures with the right lighting to show the heterochromia.

People don’t always notice because it’s not like everyone I talk to stares into my eyes. But occasionally, I’ll be talking to a friend and they’ll suddenly burst “your eyes are different colors!”

Matt said it was one of the first things he noticed about me and he thinks it’s really cool. I think he kind of has to say that as my husband, but it has still given me the confidence to like it instead of hide it.

And look … sometimes I do wear makeup and style my hair. It’s a miracle. Wait, no, it was a Sunday.

And as a matter of principle, I don’t touch up my wrinkles and blemishes. You get me as I am!

I think heterochromia is so cool and I love to meet other people with it! It’s the weird things about us that make us different from everyone else. I’m learning to embrace my weirdness and love myself just as I am.

There you go, now you know something about me that you didn’t know you didn’t want to know. Ha!

From my home to yours,
Mary

I knew a girl growing up with a blue eye and blonde lashes and brow, then a brown eye and brown lashes and brow. It was very cool. Elle was one with a stripe of brown in one of her blue eyes. Unique!
