I’m so excited to announce a new challenge starting this summer! It will begin next Monday on June 5th! For 10 weeks, we will focus on a different area of the home each week. You will get to choose to declutter, clean, organize, or decorate – whatever you feel inspired to do!
I want to help you with a little structure, and of course the momentum of knowing so many others are doing the same thing, but I want you to feel the freedom to do what you feel is most needed in each space. But picking a project simply because it excites you the most is okay too!
The projects each week do not need to be huge and take tons of time, because it can be as simple as cleaning that light fixture in the dining room, cleaning the dust layer off in the garage, or sprucing up your living room with new curtains and throw pillows. But maybe some weeks will call for bigger projects – maybe it’s time to finally finish decluttering your office, deep cleaning your kitchen, or painting your bedroom. You have the framework and the freedom to do what you need to do!

I need tips on what to do with lots of albums of photos my mother left behind when she passed. Are they safe online? Most will be tossed but there are some very old ones I would like to keep safely somewhere without taking up a lot of room. How would you organize them?
Mary says
Pictures are a tough one, but yes, they are safe stored digitally if they are properly backed up. I’m not exactly sure what you’ve got to know how to organize them, but I’d definitely start with scanning them in to back them up.

Robyn Ducret says
Hi! I just downloaded the summer challenge but the title page with the weekly challenges wasnāt there?
Mary says
Hi Robyn – Feel free to email me with questions about your order! My email is mary@johansonfamily.com. The summer challenge is a “choose your own adventure” between decluttering, cleaning, organizing, and decorating. The bundle doesn’t include a specific plan for the summer, but it includes helpful printables and checklists for lots of the areas we’re working on. That way, when you’re in that area, you have some lists to get you started. Let me know if you have more questions!

I have retired and am planning to move to another state (as soon as I can find a house to buy). I don’t want to move a lot of material/things that could/should be trashed, recycled, donated, etc. Any ideas on how best to combine decluttering, cleaning, and packing into a process that doesn’t make me crazy or so exhausted I give up? Thanks in advance.
Mary says
I usually prefer to spread things out over weeks and different challenges that are specific to decluttering or cleaning, because I’m honestly not sure there’s a way to do it in a short period without getting exhausted. Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear. You have some work ahead of you, but just know that it will be worth it and getting as much as you can manage each day will add up over time and you’ll get there. Good luck!
Susan says
Horrible coincidence: The challenge is to work in the garage this week. Our water softener developed a BAD leak and flooded a major part of the garage. I get to spend the week sorting through – and probably throwing away š« – a lot of stuff.
Mary says
Oh goodness! I’m so sorry to hear that, but I guess the silver lining is the garage got cleaned this week. I hope it went okay!

I’m finally in!

Yay! (I’m late replying to comments since our vacation. Catching up now!)

I have lots of boxes full of old books in the garage from when my dadās office had to be cleared out to replace carpet. Some books may be valuable and others not so much. Other items are my grandmotherās Christmas decorations and items we started to pack up from the house to make room for my husband I to move in to care for my parents. Whatās the best way to get rid of books? Do I take time to sell items online (not good at) or find if something is valuable? Also have my motherās china painting kiln and boxes of unpainted china in the garage.
Mary says
Do you have the time or do you really need the money? If not, I would personally find a place that will accept the donation. For unique items, offering for free online will help unite the item with someone who would love to use it. Sometimes donations go straight to the trash unfortunately. I’m thinking someone will love the unpainted china. How much better would you feel if the stuff were all gone and not something you had to deal with anymore?
Susan says
I somehow don’t have the Week 7 email. Any chance it can be sent again? It isn’t in my Inbox, Spam or Trash. š¤·āāļø
Mary says
I’m so sorry that I’m not able to re-send emails. There wasn’t anything big you missed, but I love that you care about the newsletters. Thank you!
Susan Wilkerson says
Thank-you. Your plans helped give me ideas for mine. š
