I couldn’t let another month pass without selecting one of my kids’ favorite books of all time. This book club is about enjoying new books with kids, but I also want to balance that with sharing our much-loved favorites with you too. This pick is in the top 3 of favorite books around here: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
We’ve owned this book for more than a few years now, and our copy has been taped together about 5 times. I asked one of my twins how many times she has personally read this book – she guessed at least 20. Here is our very worn copy –
About this Book’s Month
This book is an adventure story that brings ancient Greek mythology into our time. The story is so fun and interesting that kids don’t even realize they are learning so much. Percy Jackson, the main character, finds out his father is Poseidon and that he gets to go to school at a cool Camp Half Blood for other kids whose parents are Greek Gods.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
This is part of a set of books that keep the story going and all are awesome.
A movie for this came out a few year ago, maybe you’ve seen it. You should still read the book (my kids think the book is better!) I did see a $3 option on Amazon for the movie at the time I wrote this, not bad at all.
Activity Ideas
What do you do for a book we’ve already read and loved so much. I’ve even read this one aloud one summer about 4 years ago. I really thought and thought about this and finally came up with an idea that turned out so fun – I think we’ll do this again. We got out some water colors and colored pencils and tried to create a new original cover for the book.
We each used a few sheets, so we could do some artistic planning before our final copies. I got out my water colors, which the kids really enjoyed. Reminded me of our fun painting afternoons, but the conversation was more about books.
{The boy has no idea what we’re talking about, but he still likes to hang out with us. We held this last meeting in between soccer and volleyball games on a Saturday afternoon.}
I didn’t take pictures of all the final covers. My girls were feeling self-conscious having their work shared on a blog, so I was sensitive to that.
If you’re interested in the water color stuff – here is what we used:
I hope you are enjoying your book clubs with your kids. Over here, we are still loving this new tradition!
From my home to yours,
Mary
This is my daughters favorite series! I’ve never read them but I’m going to do this with her. She’ll be so excited. I love the idea of making your own book cover art. Thanks!
I’m so glad to hear it. You’ll have so much fun with this!
