A Ruff Week for Cookie

Cookie “became a lady” on the first day of school so the week has been extra tough for her: missing her kids and feeling icky. She was just pure sadness, it was so hard to watch.

I wrote about this on my personal Facebook page, and after I wrote it, I realized I could have said the EXACT same thing about myself during that first week of school.

Cookie has had a rough week going through “lady problems” that coincided with her kids going back to school … so yeah, her depression is visible! 😭 In her sad state, she has stuck to me like glue, warming my feet at my desk and giving me constant sad puppy eyes.

In a few weeks, I’m sure she’ll go right back to her star-athlete status. And she’ll learn to rest during the school day to save up energy for her kids coming home after school, like she did last year. Hang in there Cookie, this feeling won’t last forever.

Many of these photos have been taken on my bed, which makes sense because her and I spent a lot of time curled up in that bed during “sad week.”

She is normally a VERY active puppy, but this week, she just wants to lounge around. I hate going from room to room because she follows me around and I hate disturbing her rest. She is just so pitiful this week!

She wasn’t alone. Seriously, I was a mess that first week of school (2 weeks ago). I went into a funk. Notice the lack of blog posts and newsletters? Yeah, not a coincidence of timing. Pictures of me curled up on the bed just aren’t as cute, but Cookie and I had a lot in common.

So I’ll just focus on the adorable pictures of my fluffy best friend, Cookie.

And seriously, as I was just writing “fluffy best friend,” she started licking my toes while she is hanging out at my feet. Bless her sweet little heart.

Yes, my dog is wearing diapers because of said “lady problems.” She will be spayed in 6 weeks, when all the swelling has gone down.

We wanted to let her go through one heat cycle because it is recommended for her breed (golden doodle).

And yes, all of these pictures were taken within the same week. How could I not document her in diapers?! It was just too cute!

On the 6th day, she decided she had enough and started to chew up all of her diapers. When I first saw what she did, I laughed harder than I have in maybe years.

Sometimes about it was just too funny. The thought “doggie lingerie” crossed my mind and I laughed some more. It just looks so ridiculous!

Poor baby, hopefully she feels like herself soon. This is her 3rd and hopefully final week of heat. Hang on, Cookie, this won’t last forever.

Also, note to self — Mary, hang on, this won’t last forever.

From my home to yours,
Mary

We have a Goldendoodle too, four months old. Can I ask why they recommend a heat cycle for the breed? I was at her first vet appointment today, and the vet said we could pretty much go either way (a heat cycle makes bone cancer less likely but breast cancer more likely and vice versa if we spay before a heat cycle). I would love to know what your vet thinks, though, because I keep hearing conflicting opinions. And the diaper is too cute lol!

There wasn’t one definitive source I listened to, it was a mixture of other owners’ experiences and my vet’s advice. I know the con about the increased likelihood of breast cancer, but it was outweighed by the pros of which I understand are a decrease in future UTI’s, letting her body finish growing hormonally supposedly helps hips and joints, letting her go through this will help with calming/obedience, and what you said about bone cancer. One person I talked to said they wanted all their girls to go through at least 2-3 heat cycles before spaying. I’m definitely not an expert, but after hearing a lot of different opinions, I became comfortable with the idea of one heat cycle. I hope this helps! I hope you’re enjoying your baby-puppy! They get big so fast. Cookie turns 1 year old this weekend!

Thanks! I’ll do a little more reading then since there seem to be other advantages. I have about four months to make up my mind. 🙂
